Intelligent Workplace, Digital Transformation & Serverless Development

IT Leadership Meeting Recap: Intelligent Workplace, Digital Transformation & Serverless DevelopmentIntelligent Workplace, Digital Transformation & Serverless Development

In our discussion during last Friday's IT Leadership group meeting, Sayeed Reza, IT Director, Product Delivery and Ben Hamer IT Director, Product Delivery, shared their experiences surrounding the topic, Intelligent Workplace, Digital Transformation, & Serverless Development.

The IT industry is being disrupted and business customers expect agility speed, security, quality, and low costs. If organizations are going to be part of this digital transformation that is sweeping the industry they must be able to efficiently and effectively deliver value for their business customers and partners. The more organizations can automate the more they can focus on their customers and providing for them.

What is serverless computing one may ask? In our discussion last Friday, we defined serverless computing as a cloud computing execution model in which the cloud provider dynamically managers the allocation of machine resources. Pricing is based on the actual amount of resources consumed by an application, rather than on pre- purchased units of capacity. Serverless computing allows for the following:

  • No Server Management: No need to provision or maintain any servers. There is no software or runtime to install, maintain, or administer.
  • Flexible Scaling: Your application may be scaled automatically or by adjusting its capacity through toggling the units of consumption rather than units of individual servers.
  • High Availability: Built- in availability and fault tolerance. No need to architect for these capabilities because the services running the application are provided by default.
  • No Idle Capacity: No need to pay for idle capacity or pre- or over-provision capacity.

How intelligent is your workplace? As BlueCross BlueShield transforms into an intelligent workplace, Ben Hamer and Sayeed Reza shared their team's goals of providing frictionless digital experiences, personalization of services, and deeper customer engagement. Their team is making the knowledge worker more proficient by infusing smart technologies in the workplace. Some things that have been effective for BCBS has been the use of their SKYEchat PoC which made the BlueCross Skye mascot interactive and even more user friendly. Since Skye prototypes continue to grow, BCBS has implemented an HR phone answering Bot that is able to answer any questions it can and routes the call if it cannot.

As IT continues to evolve, organizations must continue to stay relevant. Digital transformation, serverless development, and workplace intelligence are three things organizations should consider familiarizing themselves with. Companies are leveraging technology now more than ever before to stay competitive, and we can't wait to see what 2018 has in store.

How is your organization staying relevant in this digital transformation?
