OMG Meeting Recap: Reinventing Yourself and The Challenges That Come from It

Reinvention never stops. It is an evolutionary journey that requires work and effort every single day. We reinvent ourselves for a variety of reasons, from getting into shape to changing careers. However, reinvention isn’t something that will happen overnight, and there will likely be failures and setbacks along the way. Reinvention can definitely be a challenge, but a challenge that can be very rewarding. At last week’s Opportunity Management Group meeting, members shared personal experiences and opinions around this idea of reinvention. They took away many valuable pieces of information to carry with them as they take on the New Year.

How do you reinvent yourself? What steps should you take? What resources can help you?

Self-evaluation is key. You must analyze and ask yourself: Where am I now and where do I want to be? What are my strengths, weaknesses, and passions? From this evaluation, set goals for yourself and create a game plan of how you can accomplish those goals. Reinvention isn’t an easy process, so it is important to utilize resources such as networking groups, educational classes/trainings, mentors, and so on to achieve your end goal. Most importantly, if you need help do not be afraid to ask for it! People want to see you succeed and are willing to lend a hand if you ask.

What challenges might you face while reinventing yourself? How do you overcome them?

Change is hard so you are bound to face some challenges throughout the reinvention process. Expect setbacks and use them to your advantage and learn from them. Allow them to push you forward instead of holding you back. While reinventing yourself, these are some challenges you may encounter:

  • Self-defeating thoughts
  • External and internal resistance
  • Gaining support
  • Unrealistic goals
  • Overcoming fear
  • Cost (financial) barriers
  • Motivation
  • Time constraints
  • Blind spots (unforeseen roadblocks)

During the break out exercise, one member shared that, when faced with challenges, it’s important to stay positive and think back to why you started this journey in the first place. Reflection is key and is something you should do every day.

What are the differences between personal brand and reputation? What is the importance of presence?

When reinventing yourself, you alter both your personal brand and your reputation, but what is the difference between the two? Personal brand and reputation can sometimes be used interchangeably, but there is a distinct and meaningful difference.

Personal Brand: What you say about yourself, the way you present yourself, self-defined/you control, enduring

Reputation: What others say about you, how others perceive you, opinions formed by others, temporary

Our presence is the combination of our personal brand and reputation, and is something we should always be aware of. Presence isn’t just physical, but digital (Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.) as well. As we reinvent ourselves and change, it’s important to keep both consistent and genuine.

Once again, reinvention never stops. We reinvent ourselves over and over again to become the best version of ourselves. So, keep pushing yourself until you find that version.
