Women in Leadership Meeting Recap: 2017 - The Power of Women
At last week’s Women in Leadership group meeting, Silvia Hinton, VP of Barriers to Entry at York Solutions, facilitated a great discussion around The Power of Women as we looked back at 2017.
After the Women's March kicked off in the beginning of 2017, people began to wonder, what would come next? Women proceeded to make great strides this past year, and they don't seem to be slowing down. The "Me Too" movement reached 85 countries and inspired young women all around the world to share their stories. 2018 kicked off with a moving speech from Oprah Winfrey at the Golden Globes, along with the women of Hollywood making a statement dressed in black, as well as the Women's March for the second year in a row.
As we express gratitude to the many who have shared their stories, we now turn to face what 2018 has in store. During the discussion we wanted to brainstorm ways to navigate these difficult times and ways to press forward. As a group we came up with a few ideas we could all adopt:
- Establish consent – Asking/giving permission
- Empowerment - Give the ability to say "no"
- Advocacy - Name it when you see it
- Education in the workplace – Establish procedures
- Educate our youth - What to do in the moment and after
- Understand that things will happen - Intentional and unintentional
As we move into 2018, we realize that this will be yet another monumental year for women. More women will hold leadership roles in the workplace as well as political power. Less women will be leaving industries such as IT, only allowing them to continue to move up in the ranks. Pay has not been equal for women and their male counterparts for most firms, but many states will continue to move towards pay equity. Last, but not least, women systems for reporting sexual harassment will continue to build strength.
As we reflect on the year, we can conclude that 2017 was the year women's voices were heard. Women of all ages came together to say enough is enough. Although 2017 has come and gone, we will never forget what unfolded. As stated by Oprah, "A new day is on the horizon! And when that new day finally dawns, it will be because of a lot of magnificent women... and some pretty phenomenal men."
What do you think is in store form women in 2018?
